Dokan Charity Championships
Sunday 2nd December 2012
, Sunderland

This was a last minute competition for the club so we only entered a small squad of five. They all did well though, Roy & Danny Boy got some much needed mat time and Lewis came away with GOLD in Kata, SILVER in Kumite; Connor a BRONZE in Kumite & Harvey also bringing back a BRONZE in Kumite.

The competition was really good and raised a lot of money for local good causes. Looking forward to the next one.

Hartlepool Wadokai hosted EKF Coaching Quals Course
Sunday 25th November 2012
, Hartlepool

This was the second of these courses that our club has hosted. This year we gained two more qualified instructors at the club and Sensei Carl achieved 'Specialist' coach status - meaning that he has helped athletes compete at World level.

Sensei Lynne - Level 4

Sensei Michael - Level 3

Sensei Carl - Specialist

Sensei Amy - Level 3

Sensei Vince - Level 3

Sensei Beth - Level 1

Sensei Roy - Level 1

A black belt isn't a coaching qualification which is where these types of quals come in. They ensure that the club/coach/Sensei knows how to teach safely and correctly, whilst following the correct rules. We're the only Karate club in Hartlepool that has EKF qualified instructors and one of a few in the country that has ALL of it's instructors qualified through the National Governing Body. This is just one of the ways that we work to 'best practise' guidelines.

Wadokai European Championships
Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th November 2012
, Venice

Lewis Muldown was the only representative of Hartlepool Wadokai at the Wadokai European Championships this year. We had three selected (Jas, Phil & Lewis) but we had to pull Phil out and Jas managed to get injured falling off her scooter which put her out too!

Lewis travelled out with his parents and fitted into the squad really well considering this was his first time at this level. He fought his socks off and got a well earned Bronze medal for his efforts. Well done.

Thanks to Tara Wilson (1), Kirstie Emery (2) & Raj Bhardwaj (3) for allowing us to use their photos.

This competition costs £1000 each year to run (Trophies, Medals, Hall Hire, Judges etc...) so it's important to get the numbers in. The sponsored walk that we run each year helps to keep the entry cost down to a minimum too.

    Club Sponsored Walk
    Sunday 16th September 2012
    , Hartlepool

Thank you to everyone who turned out for this year's annual sponsored walk. As we often do, we walked from Brierton School to Dalton and back via Summerhill. The weather was kind to us and it was great to see so many people supporting the event.

As always the fundraising from this event goes towards the clubs annual club-only championships.

We've got pictures somewhere, once we've found them we'll post them.

    CEWKA Championships
    Sunday 8th July 2012
    , Walsall

Jas, Lewis & Phil set off on the 400 mile round trip to Wolverhampton University Walsall Campus for the Central England Wado-Ryu Karate Championships. The competition is very popular with some of the strongest competitors in the UK attending. This year was no exception and Lewis & Phil got their eyes opened to the level of contact that is now allowed under the newest competition rules. Both took a number of heavy hits but it's all part of learning how to become a better fighter. Jas came away with two bronze medals for her efforts.

Sensei Lynne judged all day at the event & Carl was coaching.

    Club social night
    Saturday 7th July 2012
    , Hartlepool Rovers

Finishing off a really busy day was a club social night. We were disappointed with the turnout this year but a lot of our students are active in other sports clubs and with two other big events going on at the same time, it was inevitable that numbers would drop a little.

Those that did attend enjoyed themselves though it should be noted that Julie's quiz was sooooo difficult that even Google didn't know the answers... :-p

We'd like to thank fellow HSA members, Hartlepool Rovers for the use of their venue.

Club Training & Grading with Sensei Keith Walker
    Saturday 7th July 2012
    , Hartlepool

After a busy morning at the Throston Primary School Olympic Fun Day, we grabbed a bite to eat and headed across town to the Belle Vue Sports Centre for a training & grading course with Sensei Keith Walker. His courses are always high energy affairs and this one was no exception with various training drills and exercises done - a lot of which were completely new to some of the students, so they loved it!

It's always good to bring in a high calibre instructor from outside of the club, it acts as a quality control for the instructors making sure we're teaching correctly.

Congratulations to those that graded: Joe Hind (4th Kyu), Graham Hind (5th Kyu), Tommy Beer (5th Kyu) & Adam Cowan (6th Kyu).

Throston Primary School Olympic Fun Day
    Saturday 7th July 2012
    , Hartlepool

We've had a very successful after school Karate club at Throston Primary school since September 2009. Each year the parents organise a Fun Day and this year was themed to the Olympics. We performed a short demo of Kihon (Basics), Kata, Kick Master and Kumite (Sparring) the highlight probably being the young after school students sparring against the teenagers from the main club.

The day was really enjoyable, with lots of different demonstrations and activities on offer. One of the Olympic torch bearers even came along so that people could get their photos taken holding a peice of Olympic history. Sadly we couldn't stay all day because we had a crazy busy day with the club.

Hartlepool Wadokai Beginners (Club-Only) Karate Championships
    Saturday 23rd June 2012
, Hartlepool College of Further Education

This was only our second ever competition exclusively for our beginners. The event was held to be a stepping stone to some of our bigger competitions that we now run annually and was designed to be a low key affair, with none of the bells and whistles that we usually have at our events. We didn’t want to intimidate our inexperienced competitors. The event was also used as a training opportunity for our cadets to get some judging practise in. They all worked hard throughout the day and we’d like to thank them once again for their efforts.

Please visit the club's blog for a full report and pictures.

EKF Kyu Grade National Karate Championships
    Sunday 22nd January 2012, Sheffield

We left Hartlepool two hours before dawn (approx 6am) on a very cold, wet and windy Sunday morning (22nd Jan). Ponds Forge in Sheffield was the venue of the 1st English Karate Federation Kyu Grade Karate Championships so, Sheffield was where we were heading!

Apart from being unable to find somewhere to park the mini-bus (gratefully borrowed from Hartlepool College of Further Education) the journey was uneventful. The competitors signed in and got changed, the parents tried to get comfortable on the seating and Lynne and Carl reported to the chief referee to find out where we would be working (Judging) all day. Amy (coach) then briefed the competitors and made sure they were ready for the day.

The day was pretty well organised and was done and dusted in about 9 hours, not bad for such a large entry! I think we could have easily shaved at least an hour off the day if it wasn’t for the usual time-wasting issues at competitions: kids not turning up when they’re supposed to, with incorrect equipment, occasional admin errors etc… but no competition is ever perfect.

This was the second time I’d helped judge at an EKF comp and a first for Lynne and we both thoroughly enjoyed it, even though it was like working in an oven – for 9 hours!!

The three competitors (Lewis, Phil, Bailey) that entered from our club did very well in Kata and Kumite despite the fact that this was the first EKF competition any of them had entered. We entered expecting zero medals, we just wanted to get some competitors on the mat as early as possible so that we had something to work on early in the season.

    Results are as follows:

Phil Salmons: 3rd Place - Team Kumite, Boys 12-13yrs

Lewis Muldown: 3rd Place - Team Kumite, Boys 12-13yrs

Lewis Muldown: 3rd Place - Individual Kumite, Boys 12-13yrs -45kg

Bailey Reed: 3rd Place - Team Kumite, Boys 12-13yrs

Bailey Reed: 3rd Place - Individual Kata, Boys 12-13yrs

Bailey Reed: 2nd Place - Individual Kumite, Boys 12-13yrs +45kg

We got back to Hartlepool at about 9.30pm making it a mammoth 15.5 hour day and the longest ‘Karate day’ our trio of competitors have faced so far.

Key Learnings: The competitors need to work on keeping energy and hydration levels constant throughout the day by eating and drinking correctly to ensure peak performance.

Next Event: Wadokai England Squad Training, Saturday 28th January – Leicester; EKF Referee Training, Sunday 29th January, Barnsley

Summary: We were a little disappointed to only field 3 competitors at this event despite having a pretty big club, those that didn’t attend missed a great opportunity to get some time on the mats. There is still a lot of work to do with all three competitors in Kata & Kumite but each performed well and if they keep up the hard work and enthusiasm then the future should be bright for them.

    Askam Karate Club Course
    Saturday 21st January 2012
    , Askam-in-Furness

Carl and Amy both were asked once again to visit Askam Karate Club to run a course. We arrived a little earlier than planned because there was very little traffic on the road and we were surprised to find Sensei Matt and Sensei Danny already putting the Askam students through their paces.

This saved us having to run a warm up and we could get stuck straight into the class. We put them through basics, kata and talked them through the new competition rules.

The Askam students were great as always, they tried really hard throughout and hopefully they learned loads.

Hartlepool Borough Council Olympic Inspire Program
    Tuesday 3rd January 2012

There are only 206 days until the start of the 2012 London Olympic Games and 239 days for the start of the Paralympic Games. Over the next few months I’m sure it’ll be easy to get caught up in the media hype with most politicians, business types, media moguls and the like wanting to cash-be associated in some way with this fantastic showcase of some of the worlds greatest Sporting champions.

Hartlepool Borough Council have recognised that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to ‘inspire’ a generation to take part, and excel in sport and recreation. To this end they have launched their own Inspire Exhibition which showcases the wealth of female sporting superstars in the town including our club’s very own Amy Jorgeson (nee Coulson) – See above.

These posters will be featured across the town, the local art gallery and of course the local schools. On top of this, the athletes may be visiting the local schools to talk to students and ‘inspire’ them to get involved and perhaps even running training sessions for the students!
