At the committee meeting yesterday, some changes to the management team were agreed. Due to work / studying commitments, both Sam (Welfare Officer) and Andrea (Press officer) have stepped down from the management team. On behalf of Hartlepool Wadokai, I would like to thank them both wholeheartedly for their support.
3 volunteers have kindly taken up the vacant posts. Steven Wilmot has agreed to take over as 'Press Officer', in addition to him managing the club newsletter. Erin Langley and Diane Wilmot have agreed to take up and share the 'Club Welfare' post. Mikey Jorgeson was also voted into the vacant 'Squad Manager' position.
Committee Meeting 1st September 2008, Hartlepool Divers Club
The main purpose was to give feedback on the club competition and discuss a number of other issues. Sensei Carl decided to send a 10 page document of items for the agenda (via email from Japan), so no doubt the meeting overran a little!

Nathan Bartram - Boy Genious! August 2008
July/August time sees all the local school GCSE league tables released in the local newspaper, the Hartlepool Mail. It gives me great pleasure in announcing that Nathan Bartram, a 1st Kyu (Brown belt) from our adult class was named as having some of the best GCSE results in the town. He achieved 6 x A*; 5 x A's; 1 x B and 1 x C. A fantastic achievement, well done Nathan.

A special mention... Luke Dawkins July 2008
As you are all aware, the local schools have shut up shop for the summer. A number of schools finished out their year with various awards ceremonies. It gives me great pleasure to report that one of our students, Luke Dawkins, who just so happens to be the current Student of the Year,
was given a very special award from St Cuthberts School at his awards ceremony, an Outstanding Contribution to School Life award.
He was one of only two students at the school to receive such an award. Well done Luke, you've done us all proud.

Carl & Amy's Last training session 28th June 2008, Belle Vue Sports Centre

We thought we would have a more relaxed lesson since it would be the last time Carl & Amy would be at the club for a whole year. We combined all the kids from both Friday classes and put the emphasis on fun, so we had a lot of games and stamina during the class, and we finished training with some grappling exhibition bouts. One of the best matches was with Lewis T & Taurean, but Lewis eventually won out with a very good arm bar. The finale was Sensei Carl smoking Sensei Michael with a well placed choke hold to make him tap out. We finished training, had a few short speaches (Carl's was terrible!) and we finished off with Hot Dogs and Cake - nice!
Sensei Peter May, Training & Grading Course 15th June 2008, Belle Vue Sports Centre
Sensei Peter May, assisted by Sensei Mairi Kerin gave another very good training course. The turnout was lower than previous occasions, but that just meant that we had more space to work on the different aspects of Wado. Sensei put the kids through various grappling techniques and applications, and then they all had time to practise on each other. One of the kids was quick to point out that one of the moves being taught was actually the 'Undertakers' speciality. It was easy to see which kids were WWE fans. It's fair to say that the kids loved the training.
The adults continued along a similar track to the kids, though at a lot slower pace. A lot of the seniors were still shaking off the effects of last nights party. Though, we still covered a lot of kumite drills, and of course moved onto grappling. Another good course from Sensei.
Congratulations to Amy Comb, on successfully grading to 2nd Kyu after giving Sensei Amy a beating in both the pairs work and the free fighting.
Carl & Amy's Leaving Party 14th June 2008, Hartlepool Divers Club
Carl has got a job in Japan teaching English, and has decided to take Amy with him. He will be teaching students at the Shiramizu dojo, in Sugito town (greater Tokyo area) led by Arakawa Sensei.
To celebrate the fact that Carl and Amy will be leaving for a whole year, it was decided by the powers that be, that we should hold a leaving party.
See the gallery for an idea of what went on...
The 5th Hartlepool Wadokai Cup 1st June 2008, Belle Vue Sports Centre
This years competition was organised in under four weeks and was brought forward from Sept/Oct time due to Carl & Amy leaving for Japan. The schedule was pretty tight, but we ended up with a bigger, and better run competition than last year. We ran two areas for Kata this year, this enabled us to get finished for 6pm despite having more events than last year.

Hartlepool Wadokai hosted a national Karate course & Dan (Black Belt) grading on Sunday 18th May at the Belle Vue Community Centre, Hartlepool. This event is part of a series of national courses which make up Aiwakai's Way To Excellence program, thi is an assessment and grading program for potential dan grade students.
The course was led by Sensei Kuniaki Sakagami, 7th Dan, the president of England Wadokai and his team of top instructors. It was attended by 15 different clubs and over 80 people from as far afield as Holyhead and Croydon. Thanks for everyones great support!
Sensei Keith Walker opened up the session with a general warm up that was quite mild (for him!). The course quickly moved through all aspects of Wado Karate necessary to achieve a black belt. This was followed by a gruelling examination were 12 people were tested on basics (Kihon); pre-arranged form (Kata); and fighting (Kumite); to see if they had what it takes to become a black belt! Only 7 people, including 5 people from Hartlepool had the necessary skills on the day, and can now call themselves black belts.
Successful Dan grade students were:
This is the first time that Aiwakai have held such a course in the North, so it is a major coup for the town and the towns Karate clubs. Carl Jorgeson, the event organiser praised the Belle Vue centre for their help and support:
I'd also like to thank ALL the clubs & individuals that attended the course, you're support is noted and greatly appreciated. We've had some great feedback, and we'll endeavour to build on this success to bring more events to the North in the very near future. We are provisionally booking ourselves in to hold a weekend course (perhaps part of the WTE program) in the middle of September 2009, with a social night/party on the Sat night, so keep you're Diaries open...

Hartlepool Wadokai Sponsored Walk Sunday 4th May
After a few false starts, and the promises of a great weekend of camping shattered (which was called off due to terrible weather!), we finally had a sponsored walk organised. We decided to go with Plan D, which was to walk from Brierton, to Dalton, then to Summerhill. The day was a great success, and despite a few people (Amy Comb!) getting stuck in the mud, we managed to have a good laugh and the rain stayed away until the end of the walk. After the walk, Vicky and Vince offered their house as the base for a club BBQ. The weather by now was terrible, but that didn't stop everyone having a very late, but very fun night.
The people on the walk managed to raise a staggering £1165.00 for the club competition, a fantastic achievement considering the short time we had to organise the event.
Adult Quiz Night Sat 26th April 2008, Hartlepool Divers Club

The course lasted all day and took place at the Hartlepool branch of the Coastguard on Hartlepool's prestigious Marina Development.
The people who attended the course were; Sensei Michael Jorgeson; Sensei Vince Dawkins; Julie Salmons; Sue White; Erin Langley; Kate McCaffery; Amy Comb; Beth Gray.
British Karate Academy 'Bridging the Gap' course Sun 20th April 2008, Derby
Sensei's Carl and Michael travelled to Derby for this very good course, Carl only got 4 hours sleep 'cos he was up late watching the boxing!. Anyways, Sensei Peter May and Sensei Lee Minion ran the course which covered a lot of 'dirty' techniques not usually taught in the Dojo. Needless to say, everyone worked up a sweat early on, and the pace didn't really let up. Some very useful stuff, a very good course.
Joe Calzaghe Vs Bernard Hopkins 19th April 2008
Joe deserved his win - Simple!!!

Sensei Sakagami Training & Grading course, Kihon Do Hartlepool Sun 6th April 2008, Ripley
A number of Juniors and seniors from Hartlepool Wadokai took advantage of Sensei being on our doorstep and trained at Manor Kihon Do Club.
Adult only Bowling Night 22nd March 2008, Hartlepool
Loads of parents & senior students / instructors decended on the local bowling centre. Much drink, soft drinks of course! was had by all, and some rubbish scores were put up on the board. It was a good night, with a few braving the snow to hit the town afterwards too... See Julie for info on the next social event.
Budo Karate Course 9th March 2008, Midlands
Carl & Amy & Vince attended and trained at this specialist training course. It was primarily used as a catch up session from Yanagawa Sensei's first visit to the UK. Students were put through various drills & techniques to recap on the various Budo principles by Sensei' K. Sakagami and Sensei P. May. A very good and well attended course.

Sensei Peter May, Train & Grade Course, Sunday 10th Feb '08
Sensei once again travelled up from Birmingham to offer a first class training and grading session for juniors and seniors. Building on the club's recent tournament success, Sensei pushed the kids through almost two hours of Kumite drills designed to make each student a more effective fighter.
The Junior's session finished with 7 students succesfully grading, those were:
The seniors had a mixed session, starting with basic's and quickly moving onto to an indepth look at ju-jitsu and budo principles. Then onto some kumite principles. Finishing off with Vince succesfully grading for 5th Kyu (and beating up Sensei Michael in the process!).

TASK Invitational Club championships, Saturday 2nd Feb
Once again Hartlepool Wadokai was invited to take part in the Task club championships, we took the largest squad ever to this comp. The competition is designed specifically for inexperienced competitors to get some more 'mat time' before entering the larger competitions.
Some of the categories were quite large, so the fact that we brought back so many medals is testament to the club's standard. But, regardless of medals, everyone did very well. Club Results are as follows:
Japan Adventures, Sugito City, Japan, 1st July '08 - 1st July '09
Carl and Amy will be travelling to Japan from 1st July 2008 for 12 months. Whilst there, they will be training at the Shiramizu Dojo run by Arakawa Sensei.
