31st North East Open Championships, Sunderland, Sunday 18th November
We took 19 competitors to this competition at the Crowtree Leisure Centre. The coach's main agenda was to see where our competitors where, so that we know what to work on for next year. The kids all did great, their lack of Kata competition experience did shine through, but that will come in time. There was some very hard fought kumite bouts across all areas, and the medal haul doesn't really reflect the effort of the kids, but its all good experience for them!

The Medal haul Was:

Yanagawa Budo Course, Walsall, Sat 11th & Sun 12th November
Lynne, Amy, Vince, Carl & Michael attended this course, (Sensei Michael could not train due to a back injury!). The course was very well attended and didn't disappoint.
There will be a more detailed report coming soon...

35th European Wadokai Karate Championships, Gothenburg Sweden, Saturday 3rd November
Amy and Carl represented Hartlepool Wadokai and the England Wadokai National Team in Gothenburg. Congratulations to Amy who brought back a bronze medal in ladies Team Kumite and a bronze individual medal too. Carl also brought back a bronze medal in mens Team Kumite and a bronze individual medal. The England team brought back a massive 40 Trophies, i believe this is our biggest haul to date.

Check out the wadokai england website for full results - www.wadokaiengland.co.uk.

Sensei Sakagami at Kihon Do Club, Sunday 14th October
Sensei' Lynne and Michael both trained at Manor College with Sensei Sakagami.

Hartlepool Wadokai Social Night, Saturday 13th October
Despite their being no cake - at all! i mean, not even a slice!!! The night was well attended and the entertainment was great (special thanks to Alan at Discotech for that!), thanks to Julie for taking the time organising and fundraising on the night.

Alan had a lot going on to entertain the masses, from a quiz to a karaoke competition with a difference! This involved a number of parents being volunteered to sing any song of their choosing into the mike, the only rule is that you can't repeat a song thats already been sung, sound easy enough?. Most of the parents crashed out in the first or second round leaving Ian (Paul & Daniel's dad) and Scot (Kyle's Dad). The pair were great, Ian played it safe mostly with nursery rhymes and one or two big numbers that got the crowd going. Scot, well scot was a bit of a show off to be honest. Songs ranging from Meat Loaf right through to Vanilla Ice stole the show and had everyone is hysterics. The winner however, turned out to be Ian in the end.

Next up, was Carl and Scot (Again!) in a blindfolded race across the pub. The pair had to race across the pub, climb over someone on all fours, grab an apple off a table, and race back - all completely blindfolded. Naturally, Sensei Carl won. BUT amid ridiculous accusations of Sensei cheating, and stealing Scot's apple!, was forced to forfeit. The forfeit being that any physical punishments (press-ups etc...) that Carl gave out in class for the next two weeks had to be done by Carl himself two fold! Shocking i know, but suprisingly the kids didn't get as many punishments as usual for the next two weeks.

Hartlepool Wadokai Annual Club Competition, Sunday 7th October
The 4th Hartlepool Wadokai Cup was bigger and better than ever, see the full report online...

WadoEXL (National Wado Karate Championships), Shrewsbury, Sunday 30th Sep
This was billed to be the biggest Wado-only extravanza in years and it didn't disappoint! The competition was very well organised and very professional. It had its own TV crew, and some fantastic Demonstrations from Sakagami Sensei, Goju Ryu, and a traditional Drum team. England Wadokai took their full squad to this event as a run out for their European Championships. The squad did very well with Hartlepool Wadokai's own Carl getting - 1st in Team Kumite and Amy getting - 2nd in Ladies Team Kumite and 3rd in individual Kumite. The only critism of the event is that it was faaaaaaar too long, Carl and Amy didn't get home until 2am!

Wadokai England Squad Session , Sunday 23rd Sep
Carl and Amy attended this Elite squad session.

Hartlepool Wadokai Bowling night, ADULTS only, 22nd Sep
I think an ‘adult only’ event was long over due, the parents are the back bone of the club. They always manage to drag their kids to the club for us to beat some discipline into them (even on these cold winter nights!). So, as a special thank you, we decided to give them a FREE bowling night. Everyone had a great night and was particularly merry when we got evicted at closing time, some even hit the town afterwards! Keep an eye out for the next social event coming soon...

Wado Academy Squad Session , Sunday 9th September
Carl and Amy both attended this very tough training session run by Sensei Arthur Meek.

Hartlepool Wadokai Expedition, Lake District, Sunday 31st Aug / 1st Sep / 2nd Sep
Amy, Carl and Mark set up base camp at the foot of the mighty Hellvelyn mountain and climbed it in one go, occasionally dragging mark up who was busy kicking and screaming. The small group took no chances on there mini adventure, being meticulous in their prep work and research. This obviously went to the dogs when Carl diligently boiled the kettle for a well deserved cup of tea at the top, only to realise that no-one thought to bring any cups!!! We did however settle for some very tasty Pot Noodles!!!

Not only did the group conquer Hellvelyn in the Lake District, but they also spent the day paddling* Ullswater Lake while they were at it, See the Gallery for some er... interesting pictures.

*The original plan was to paddle the full length of the lake, but none of us realised it was half the length of England!

AMA Eastern Open Championships, Sunday 19th August
Amy and Carl attended this one. Unfortunately neither brought home trophies this time.

Wadokai England Squad Session , Sunday 5th August
Congratulations to both Carl and Amy on being selected to the Elite Wadokai Team.

Club Sponsored Walk, Saturday 23rd June
This year, the parents decided upon the lake district. The first thought went to climbing Hellvelyn, however our scouts could not walk for a week afterwards so we decided upon the less challenging walk around Derwent Lake.

This was a good weekend for the club, the weather was great and everyone had a great time. See the gallery for more information.

Cumbrian Open Championships , Sunday 17th June
Amy, Faye and Becca attended this competition. This was also the first time the club has entered a Ladies Team in a domestic comp too. Congratulations to Amy on winning 3rd in ladies Kumite.

Wadokai England Squad Session , Sunday 3rd June
Carl and Amy attended this squad.

Sensei Peter May Training and Grading Course, Sunday 13th May
The juniors trained for approx 2 hours covering loads of stuff as usual. Sensei gave the class a good workout with specific Kumite Drills, Kata and Basics. We had 6 Juniors try for and pass their grades too!

Sensei also awarded the Student of the Year award for 2006 to Charlotte Welsh, who was a little bit pleased!

The seniors asked Sensei to cover 'closing the distance', 'Angles of attack' and 'Hit and Run tactics', Sensei gave us some very good drills and line work. We then moved onto Ohyo Kumite and Grappling / Practical Kumite. Another really good course from Sensei Peter May.

Sakagami International Kata Competition, Sunday 11th March
The competition was cancelled due to a number of the larger midland clubs double booking themselves at other events, therefore there wasn't enough entries. There is talk of a replacement competition running in the future.

Sensei Sakagami Training Course, Sunday 4th March
This is the first time that we have hosted a Sensei Sakagami training course at our Dojo. The course was very well attended with students from Leeds Wadokai Karate Club; Kobukan Karate Club, Darlington; Kihon Do Karate Club, Hartlepool; Lisa/Steve/Chris Bowman's (Can't remember the name!) Karate Club, Hartlepool.

The juniors trained first, with Sensei covering Basics; Kata; Breakfalling; Takedowns and some drills. Then the seniors trained covering Basic; Kata; Drills; Advanced pairs work; With Sensei Keith Walker then making great use of the Jigsaw mats with a selection of effective takedowns; Leeds Wadokai also had a number of students successfully grade at the course too.

Thanks to all the clubs that supported us at this event, we'll hopefully see you all at the next one.

Sensei Sakagami is next in town on 22nd April for a Training and Grading Course at Kihon Do club, Manor College of technology. If you missed out this time, try to get to the next one.

Sensei Peter May Training Course, Sunday 4th February
This training course with Sensei finished off a busy weekend for the club. The Juniors had a 2 hour session, the attendance was a little disapointing but the students that did attend ended up with a lot of support with a total of 4 other instructors helping Sensei May during the session. The Junior session ended with Sensei giving a Q+A session on bullying.

The Seniors then enjoyed a 3 hour session, which covered all the basics Kihon, Kumite, Kata, with particular emphasis on the Centre line / Centre Point. We also covered Seishan Kata; Locks, Takedowns and Grappling. In all another very good course from Sensei.

The next training course with Sensei Peter May has been booked in for Sunday May 13th, Same times and Venue.

Taisho Do Invitational Karate Championships, 3rd February
We took a squad of fourteen competitors to this competition in Thornaby. Sensei Mark Raistrick from TASK did a great job organising this competition. Our Results are as follows:

  • Aaron Pickersgill - 3rd place Kumite (approx 40 competitors in this category)
  • Craig May - 3rd Place Kata
  • Charlotte Welsh - 1st Place Kata (Fantastic effort, really well deserved)
  • Kieran Trundley - 3rd Place Kata
  • Nathan Bartram - 3rd Place Kumite
  • Carl Jorgeson - 3rd Place Kumite
  • Faye Armstrong - 1st Place Kumite (you made it look easy!)
  • Faye Armstrong - 2nd Place Kata (Should have been 1st, daft thing to tell the Ref that you made a mistake, D'oh!!!)

Everyone did really well, you should all be proud of your achievements. Even the competitors who didn't place, you were all great. Some of the categories were quite large, so it was always going to be tough. Special thanks to Julie Trundley, you were a star today. Thanks for doing all the leg work for us (it allowed us to concentrate on coaching the kids).

Well Done, keep up the hard work...

    KARATE ENGLAND STATUS
You may have heard rumblings about Karate England having financial difficulties. Instead of me going into details here, i'll point you in the right direction for you to go and read about it yourself. At least this way you won't get my biased opinion on the current situation.
